I admit that I have always been a bit
of a 'fraidy cat, on the cautious
side. Having married young I went
from my parent's house to having
my own home with my husband.
A few years later I found myself a
young mother with a husband who
traveled a great deal with his job.
Having never lived alone I found
and I was left home (with three
small children).
So I did all I knew to do -
I packed up the kids and
all their stuff and went "home to Mama" (and Daddy)
every.single.time.
my husband traveled.
After a couple of years
this got tiring, boring, old, & bothersome. And the kids and I grew
weary too.
IT.WAS.TIME.
(ok... passed time.)
The next time my husband had
to travel we (kids and I) locked our doors and stayed in our own
home. Before we went to bed
that night I prayed that God
would watch over and protect
us while we slept.
Then I went to bed and slept
"like a tired baby"...
NOT!
Actually I didn't sleep at all.
I lay awake all night listening for odd sounds
and making sure that no one crawled through
our windows.
Next night I had a BIG idea...
I drug all the canned goods
out of the pantry and lined them up
on all the window sills in our house.
Surely if anyone tried to crawl
through our windows I would
hear them as the cans
crashed to the floor.
This became a nightime ritual
which helped me get at least a
couple hours of sleep each night.

Then one day, as I was randomly
reading in Psalms, God showed
me a better way -
Got it!

You are so funny! I can see lining up canned goods in my window seal too! I have been meditating on Ps. 23 as well. It's so amazing how God has provided the answer for everything we face in life in His word!
I was 18 and married before I ever spent a night alone. All the lights and the TV on all night long--I finally fell asleep from exhaustion. Then hubby went to the field for 2 weeks (he was in the Army). Same scenario--I never did get used to it.
I wish my daughter could read this. She has a really hard time sleeping when her husband's late or gone at night. And we're too far away for her to come home to (thank goodness--oops, did I really say that out loud?)!
